Our Philanthropy: Delta Zeta’s national philanthropy supports hearing and speech impairment through the Starkey Hearing Foundation, SeriousFun, and American Society for the Deaf. Every year, each member spends several hours giving back to our community. In addition, Delta Zeta reached our goal to raise $5,000,000 in 5 years for the Starkey Hearing Foundation which started with Delta Zeta’s Hike for Hearing in February 2015 and has now become Heart for Hearing. Our dream would be to help open speech clinics for those who have only just begun to hear. Through our philanthropy, we are able to make a hands-on impact on people's lives. Each year, sisters have the opportunity to volunteer with Starkey on hearing missions in countries such as Mexico, India and Africa. Delta Zeta is the only NPC sorority to have a global impact in this way. Additionally, Delta Zeta has a partnership with Gallaudet University, the only university in the world designed to be barrier-free for deaf and hard of hearing students.
The Painted Turtle: Delta Zeta’s national service partner is The Painted Turtle, a SeriousFun Camp where children with serious medical conditions celebrate just being kids! The Painted Turtle has served over 53,000 kids with over 90 medical conditions through its summer and Family Weekend camps since it opened its doors in 2004. The Painted Turtle is funded entirely by donations, and Delta Zeta is one of its biggest supporters. The Painted Turtle also relies on the help of volunteers to run its programs, and Delta Zetas are encouraged to give their time and talent to make the camp experience special for these kids.
What We Do: The Gamma Beta Chapter at UConn is passionate about our philanthropy, and we’re working to expand our philanthropic impact. Each year we hold "Hockey for Hearing" , "Delta Zeta DessertZ" , "Dino NugZ", "Sweets for Starkey" and "Spaghetti for Starkey". Through these two events we were able to raise over $1,000 dollars for the Starkey Hearing Foundation and spent over a total of 1,000 hours volunteering for the community throughout the semester. Additionally, we participated in HuskyTHON, an 18-hour dance marathon to benefit the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Our chapter was the top Sorority Fundraiser in 2020! We also established a local partnership with Save the Children in which we sponsor a child. During Summer 2018, a member of Gamma Beta took the time to travel to The Painted Turtle to volunteer at the camp for the weekend. We are so excited to continue to grow and improve, and have so much planned for the future!
